Ceramic Tile Sculptures

I recently started working with glass and ceramic tiles set in columns of varying heights. These tile sculptures can be displayed outside public buildings or in private yards and gardens. They can also be transformed into fountains with gentle flowing water that cascades down the face of the tiles.

Ceramic Tile Sculptures Made by Andrew Karic

Approximately 7 years ago, I visited an art show in California and admired a tall steel post some 20-feet high with ceramic tile on its face. This piece is what gave me the inspiration to create my own ceramic tile sculptures. At first, I used wooden timber logs that I flattened one side of with an electric saw to make a 12” flat surface to adhere the tiles to.

My very first ceramic tile sculpture consisted of three long wooden logs with ceramic tile on the flat face of each log. I installed this first tile sculpture in front of my office building and received many compliments. Later, I took on the assembly of three 12-inch diameter steel columns cut in half with wooden supports and dense glass substrates to attach ceramic tile to.

Over the past five years, I have made half a dozen of these ceramic tile sculptures, one of which is currently displayed at the Tucson Jewish Community Center. They take a tremendous amount of work and the use of different types of ceramic and glass tiles. I also have the ability to convert these tile sculptures into fountains to create an interesting water feature.

Creating these ceramic tile sculptures, rock sculptures and smaller tabletop sculptures is my passion. Please visit my online Sculpture Gallery to view all the types of sculptures I make.
